Squad update – 6 players commit future to the star

6 first team players have committed their futures to Newtongrange Star by agreeing contract extensions at the football club.

Chris Robertson, Mikey Jones, Shaun Conlon and Aidan Barrowman have put pen to paper keeping them at the club until at least the summer of 2026 while Liam McCathie and Sean Guiney have signed on until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Manager Paul Milligan spoke about the extensions individually;

On Chris Robertson – “Robbo is an incredibly important player for us. Not just for his goals but for his work rate and energy every time he wears the Star jersey. He is a winner on and off the park and is determined to bring success to the club. I am sure the supporters, like myself, will be delighted that Robbo will be here for the next 2 seasons.”

On Mikey Jones – “Jonesy has been brilliant over the last 6 months. He has benefitted hugely from a consistent run in the team and has been virtually ever present this season. He has not long turned 21, there is still a lot more to come from him and I have no doubt he will play a huge role for us going forward.”

On Shaun Conlon – “It was really important to keep Shaun at the club. His work rate both at training and in games, his quality on the ball, his flexibility and his attitude are top class every single week. He is now entering what I believe will be the peak of his career over the next couple of seasons and we are very lucky to have him here.”

On Liam McCathie – “You are unlikely to find a better shot stopper in EOS football. Liam produces huge saves when we need him most and we are delighted he will be between the sticks next season. Liam is fast approaching 100 appearances for the Star and its no surprise he has attracted interest from the leagues above. He is from the village and loves the club, we are delighted he has agreed to extend his stay.”

On Sean Guiney – “Guiney has been a very strong performer of late and has played an important part in our recent run of good results. He is a great character to have around the dressing room, particularly with the younger players. He has turned down offers to join Premier League sides to stay here and we are delighted to keep him.”

On Aidan Barrowman – “Aidan is a star of the future. He has unbelievable talent and natural ability but just as importantly an unbelievable work ethic. He will only get better with experience and will be a great asset to the team over the next couple of years. We should all enjoy him while we can.”
